Previously, you were the Rainbow Caduceus Project. Why the change?
When we started, our main project was the distribution of rainbow caduceus ally pins. The two-snaked caduceus (aka the Staff of Hermes) is known nationally as a symbol of healthcare. While we acknowledge that the Rod of Asclepius (one-snake) may be the historically accurate symbol, we wanted to use a symbol that was easily recognizable to the majority of patients and healthcare professionals.
Since our founding, our goals and reach have grown tremendously, and we’ve adopted a name that better fits our broader purpose.
How do you pronounce caduceus?
kə-ˈdü-sē-əs or if you’re an auditory learner:
Why wear a rainbow caduceus pin?
For LGBTQ folks, accessing healthcare presents a number of challenges. Knowing that your provider is a safe space can be a game changer. The rainbow caduceus pin is a way for healthcare professionals to easily share their ally status. Healthcare professionals and students who wear this pin commit to providing compassionate care to the LGBTQ community. Seeing this subtle symbol could allow a transgender teen or elderly lesbian to feel truly comfortable with their healthcare provider for the first time.
How can I donate?
